βSlice and Diceβ (Attribute Listing) is a systematic way to reinvent a product. Instead of looking at a βcupβ as one thing, you slice it into its attributes: material, handle, shape, and volume. By modifying these individual pieces and dicing them back together, you create innovations that are otherwise invisible.
The Anatomy of an Idea
Everything you use is just a collection of attributes. To innovate, you must first deconstruct.
Define Your Subject
Pick a specific object, service, or process.
Example: A standard coffee mug.
List Every Attribute
Break it down into its physical, functional, and aesthetic parts.
- Material: Ceramic.
- Handle: Loop-shaped, on the side.
- Top: Open, circular.
- Bottom: Flat, solid.
- Function: Holds liquid, keeps it warm.
Modify Each Attribute
For each attribute, brainstorm 3-4 variations. Donβt worry about being practical yet.
- Material: Glass, wood, silicone, color-changing plastic.
- Handle: No handle, two handles, detachable handle, rope handle.
- Top: Lidded, funnel-shaped, filtered.
Dice it Back Together
Combine your best variations into a new product concept.
βA silicone, collapsible mug with no handle (textured grip) and a built-in filter for tea.β

Subject: βThe Toothbrush.β Attribute: βThe Bristles.β Modification: βSelf-dissolving bristles that release toothpaste.β How would this change the user experience?
