The ‘Idea Box’ (Morphological Analysis) is a systematic way to explore every possible version of a product or service. By breaking a problem into its fundamental “parameters” and listing “variations” for each, you create a matrix of thousands of possible combinations, many of which would never occur to you otherwise.
The Invention Engine
Complexity is your friend here. The more parameters you identify, the more unique combinations you can generate.
Define Your Subject
Identify the product or service you want to innovate.
Example: “Develop a new type of desk lamp.”
Identify Key Parameters
What are the fundamental dimensions of your subject?
- Power Source
- Material
- Style
- Features
List Variations
For each parameter, list as many variations as possible.
- Power: Solar, USB, Hand-crank, Battery.
- Material: Wood, Recycled Plastic, Frosted Glass, Concrete.
- Features: Wireless Charger, Built-in Speaker, Clock, Essential Oil Diffuser.
Create the Box & Combine
Pick one variation from each category and force them into a single concept.
- Solar + Wood + Minimalist + Essential Oil Diffuser: A sleek, cordless wooden lamp for a spa-like office environment.
- USB + Concrete + Industrial + Wireless Charger: A heavy, brutalist-style desk lamp that charges your phone via its base.
Practice
Subject: “A New Type of Wallet.” Parameters: “Material” and “Security Feature.” Combine “Carbon Fiber” with “Biometric Fingerprint Lock.” How does it work?
